BUSTING BASS
Pro Bass Fishermen Scott Sundberg and Jameson Hawn recently went on an outing to Big Lake in Skagit County. Big Lake is a 425 acre lake that many people say is on a downward spiral. But to Scott and I that is just one more reason to prove them wrong. On August 27-30 1999 we went to Scotts cabin in the Skagit flats then at 6:30 we got to the launch and quickly headed out to the first cove which was directly south of the western boat launch. We hit the first few docks with plastic worms, spinnerbaits and crankbaits. After not getting a bite in the cove we went and I switched to a STRIKE KING PRO MODEL JIG in 3/8 ounce size and it was blue/black color. Then I added a ZOOM bait co. plastic trailor in black with red glitter. I had one taker at the first dock we came to, but he got off. A few docks later I hooked into a good one, I pried a nice 3 pounder out and that made me excited. Then after that Scott tied on a similar jig that was 1/4 ounce and we began to find out what the pattern was. We went several docks without a bite and then we got to a floating dock that began with pilings then a walkway lowered it to the floating part. Under the dock was a drop that went from two feet of water to seven feet. I made several ptches and then I pitched to the transition where the dock angeled down toward the water. I bass struck and it dove quickly, the pig came up and turned upside down in a splash of water. Then the jig came out! I est. the fish at over 5 lbs. I was pissed, so we went a few docks down into another cove and Scott caught two nice fat large-mouths around 3.5 lbs. We were starting to forget about what other people said and we new the lake was great. Then like almost every perfect day it got sunny and as you may have guessed the jet skiers came out. They made lots of waves and made the water murky. Down the shore I caught another pig that was only 16" but fat as a football. We then got farther down and nothing bit so we crossed the lake and hooked into several bass that were very large and I lost a big 5+pounder at the boat and we ended up with us catching a large stringer of bass. We ended up after the three days with 35 bass weighing around 105 pounds of bass!!! A great weekend of bassin'!!!
